It is commonly required to have a Heel Shift procedure in addition to the ankle replacement.

This is often done via a keyhole procedure. A cut is made in the heel bone(calcaneus) to correct either a varus deformity where the heel curls in or a valgus deformity where it angles out and is fixed with a screw.

Midfoot arthritis is pain and inflammation of the midfoot. It occurs due to damage of cartilage or tissues around the joints. The damage may occur due to injury, ageing or autoimmunity.

The foot bones are the phalanges, the metatarsals, and the tarsal bones. The midfoot consists of 5 bones called lesser tarsal bones.

Achilles tendon ruptures are a common injury and typically occur in men between the ages of 30 and 50.

The usual injury is caused by forced eccentric loading of the plantarflexed foot meaning the calf is contracted but the foot is forced up against that contraction and the patients often think someone has kicked them in the back of the leg.

Avascular Necrosis is where a bone suffers a critical loss of blood supply which causes part or all of the bone to die. The treatment for avascular necrosis depends on the extent of bone involvement and whether collapse of the bone has occurred. The greater the extent of bone involvement the greater the risk of bone collapse and arthritis. Once bone collapse has occurred then arthritis will develop, and this will require the joint to be replaced. This is a problem in the ankle because the avascular necrosis affects the talus, and this bone is required for standard ankle replacement to work. Fortunately, at Macquarie University Hospital I have access to a unique solution which involves a 3D printed custom talus ankle replacement.

Limb lengthening and reconstruction techniques can be used to replace missing bone and to lengthen and/or straighten deformed bone segments. These procedures may be performed in both children and adults who have limb length discrepancies due to birth defects, disease, or injury.

A bunion, also known as hallux valgus, a bony prominence at the base of the big toe, which often results in pain, redness, and rubbing in footwear. 

There are many surgical options to treat a bunion. The common goal is to realign the bones in the foot, correct the deformity, and relieve discomfort. The surgery is performed as a day procedure, under the effect of a light general anesthetic and a regional nerve block.
